How To Prepare for Updating Your Kitchen

Every kitchen will eventually need a face lift, no matter what style it is. If it's time for you to update your kitchen, one of the hottest décor styles today is the sleek, clean, modern look that combines black, white, and chrome to create bold lines, wide open areas, and a clean look that will last for years. But, how do you get this look without hiring a decorator or a contractor to come and plan it for you? Here are some tips to help you plan out your new sleek, modern look for your aging kitchen:

1. Research – the key to any good plan is research and when you know what you like and what you don't, it will be easier to put together your new kitchen. There are thousands of different print magazines that will show you different styles for your kitchen and the newest appliances and trends. There are also many great web sites that will help you design your dream kitchen with a few clicks. You can also “window shop” the home improvement stores, making a list of what you like, and what you don't, in the newest modern styles. If you still don't find a style that just jumps out at you, keep searching or head to a design shop that can show you some ideas and books that you might not see in stores.

2. Decide on one look – there are several different looks when it comes to the new, modern looks. All black, all white, chrome, or any combination of these three, with a few color accents are all great choices for any kitchen; but, you'll need to decide which you prefer and stick with that look. If you don't know what you prefer, head to the home improvement store and grab some color samples from their paint department. Then, you can check the colors against your kitchen and get a better idea of what your new kitchen will look like all black or all white. You can also get color samples of different counter tops to place against the paint colors and see which you prefer. Once you have decided on a color and theme for your new, modern kitchen, it will be easier for you to plan it out.

3. Form your plan – sit down in your kitchen with your list of likes and start to sketch out your new, modernized kitchen. It doesn't have to be a high-quality work, just something that you can understand and give you a reference to go off of. This is also the time when you need to measure your kitchen wall, counters, appliances (that you aren't getting rid of) and any other areas that you will need measurements for. Make sure that you have a complete plan before you head out to the stores, such as which type of cabinets you prefer, what appliances you are going to replace, if you are adding an island or other cabinet work, and so on. You need to know the in's and out's of your new kitchen before you start on the other areas. Knowing exactly what you want will help you when you head out to price what you need.

4. Price your new kitchen – now that you have done your research, you've chosen your color theme, and you have your plan in hand, you can start to do some pricing. Check both online and off line, as you can find great deals on both. Local home improvement shops will allow you to see and feel different cabinets, counters, and much more, so you can easily decide how much you want to spend on each different area of your kitchen. If you don't find what you want at a home improvement store, search online. Most larger home improvement stores will also offer special items online that you can not find in their stores. You might also find some great deals on closeout items from the stores and the manufacturer, which can save you a ton of money on your kitchen's face lift.

Once you have your plan ready and you have priced all the items that you will need for your new modern kitchen, you are ready to begin working on updating your kitchen.
